oven pilot not staying lit

I have searched past posts but I need some help here. My stove, which was cooking so well for 8 months, is giving me trouble. We went away for a few weeks and because of past problems with an old stove, we turned off the main gas line in the basement. (probably no longer necessary but old habits die hard) When I went to re-light the oven pilot, nothing. It was working so well and now, nada- zip. I held the red button down, lit the pilot and sat for at least 3 minutes. You let go of the button and whoosh, out goes the light.
I want my oven!!!
Any ideas as to why this happened?

Yeah, the gas is on and it really isn't that absurd a question.
All the other pilot lights are fine. I guess I am just perplexed since it worked fine before, no one adjusted anything, nothing was touched at all, and now, nothing.
I have tried using one of those butane lighters with the long stem and just heating the thermocouple but come to think of it, I never heated it up before I tried lighting the pilot light.
Let me go give that a try and I will see what happens.
